Musical theatre is indigenous to America.  As a unique art form, it has evolved combining dance styles such as modern, jazz, tap, and ballet with theater in all forms from drama to comedy.  Musical theatre as a result becomes an art form which often produces magical results larger than the sum of its parts.  Musicals such as The King and I, Oklahoma and A Chorus Line deserve the recognition as enduring art forms, not simply entertainment.
